Personal Statement

For nearly five years I worked as a Designer at Time Out London magazine, working on layouts, digital artwork and typography. I regularly implemented creative and concept-led work across print and digital platforms, and was instrumental in Time Out’s redesign when the magazine went to a free model in September 2012.

Working on a weekly magazine, I learned to turn ideas around quickly, keeping communication straightforward, but always engaging. During the magazine’s redesign I reassessed the way in which Time Out conveyed information to its readers, developing a range of layout templates, as well as page furniture and feature models to give written-through copy more visual impact.

Over the past five years I have pushed trends in food, film, music, nightlife and London lifestyle. I have taken my strength as a strategic designer to give the reader an original and entertaining experience. Across print and digital editorial and commercial advertorial, I have kept the Time Out tone of voice strong and developed the brand’s visual language to lead design trends.

My years at Time Out have given me hands-on experience in art-directing photoshoots, commissioning illustrators and reworking illustrations to suit different platforms. I have worked extensively with picture editors to commission photographers and research images, and with writers, editors and subeditors to develop the way information can be conveyed. I have also chaired weekly meetings to plan the specific look and treatment of Time Out’s sections and features, both in print and digital. Contributing cover ideas and seeing covers through from concept to print when filling in for the Art Director has given me the experience of having significant responsibility in a high-profile, challenging and exciting publishing environment, and the appetite to develop further.
